In Greensboro, NC, there is a shelter for homeless women who abuse drugs with children. This place is an amazing house to give these women the opportunity to pick themselves up after hitting rock bottom. Me and my partner, Tina, got the chance to choose and redesign their kitchen so that it is more beneficial and convenient for the mothers and their children. As we know, this is a competition with HGTV that, if chosen, will be granted $20,000 to do what we designed.
When we walked in the kitchen, we noticed that they have really nice commercial grade cooler/freezer and stove with a huge hood. Then, we realized, most of our money will go to remodeling then having to buy new appliances. The only appliance that we replaced was the dishwasher. The dish washer was in such bad shape, they needed it!
We basically kept all the appliances and cabinets in the same place, just added more storage, 3 compartment sink, a pot holder above the island, better flooring and new paint and tile to bring the place to life. The color scheme was teal, cream, orange and sky blue. We chose these colors because they are bright, modern but also they have personaility - like with the orange, it stands out against the other colors. Orange and teal are warm colors and makes you feel at home, in my opinion. All appliances are stainless steel and cabinets from Lowe's in a walnut finish. We used tile from Modern Tile and covered all the walls and counter tops in a mosaic pattern.
If i can get it to load, i drew a elevation from CAD to show all the detail in cabinetry and tile work that will be used. I hope we win! It is gonna be one amazing kitchen to cook in!
